This is good news! I’d like to give a shout out to The Land Conservancy of McHenry County, the non-profit land trust who holds and monitors conservation easements mentioned in the column.

“Immediately adjacent to the property is the Conservation District’s Brookdale Conservation Area, a 1,620 acre complex of wetlands, prairie, and woodlands. In addition to the District’s public lands, the parcel is bound by conservation easements. With the successful acquisition of Camp Lakota, this means nearly 1,837 acres of contiguous lands are protected. The area will serve as an important recharge area for the county’s groundwater resources.”

40 acres of the 160-acre property were purchased by a private individual who will place a permanent conservation easement on it with The Land Conservancy of McHenry County. The Conservation District will own 120 acres of the camp.

This is wonderful to know that the Camp Lakota land will be preserved as a natural area. I have good memories of spending time helping scouts at the Camp. My two sons enjoyed learning about nature through Boy Scouts at Camp Lakota.
