NOTE: This field trip has been reschedule to March 7, 2026
Lake Springfield serves as stopover location for many species of wintering and migrating waterfowl. We will scour the lake from multiple obervation points to observe dabbling ducks such as Northern Pintail, Gadwall, and Green-winged Teal near shore and divers such as Canvasback, Redhead, and Lesser Scaup in the deeper portions. Floating rafts of Snow Geese, Greater White-fronted Geese, and Tundra Swans will also hopefully be present. A stop at Lincoln Memorial Gardens will provide easy walking on trails to the edge of the lake where we will keep an eye out for other species such as Bald Eagles, various gulls, grebes, and winter sparrows.
Based on available time and interest, we may also travel to Lake Sangchris in search of species not observed at Lake Springfield. The trip will depart from and return to Adams Wildlife Sanctuary, Springfield, Illinois.
Walking distance if any and type of surface: Several spots will be travel by van, pop out and bird, then back into the van. We plan to walk 1-2 miles of trails at Lincoln Memorial Gardens on mulched or mowed paths.
