March is indeed considered a prime time for observing Common Loon migration in Lake County as the lakes begin to thaw and loons stop to rest and feed on their journey north. Join us for the annual Loonapaloonza tour as we travel comfortably by bus in search of loons and migrant water birds in the Chain O’ Lakes area and other inland lakes in north-eastern Illinois.
Dave Johnson, our trip leader, has led this event for 50 years and knows the best locations to observe and often hear Loons calling. Possible sightings of Canvasback, Redhead, Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead, Ruddy Duck, Ring-billed Gull, Double-crested Cormorant, American White Pelican, Bald Eagle, Pied-billed Grebe, and Horned Grebe are always possible.
A spotting scope will be available, though participants are encouraged to bring their own scopes.
Park and meet at Gale Street Inn Restaurant parking lot, 935 N Diamond Lake Rd, Mundelein, IL 60060. Please plan to arrive early as we will depart on our adventure at 8:30 a.m.
Walking distance if any and type of surface: short side-trips, mostly gravel/paved parking areas.
