The Community Development Corporation of Pembroke-Hopkins Park (CDC-PHP) purchased 29.85 acres of high-quality black oak savanna with financial support from the Illinois Audubon Society. Now known as Okàn Savanna, it is located approximately 70 miles south of Chicago, along the Indiana border within the Kankakee Sands area.
Join us for a full morning of birding as we travel by van to other sites within this Important Birding Area before returning to Okàn Savanna to hike the trails and enjoy lunch.
Guides for the trip include Eric Smith (Heritage Biologist and Site Manager for the Iroquois County State Wildlife Area), Doug Stotz (IAS Board Member and Head of Research for the Field Museum) and Kim Roman (Natural Areas Preservation Specialist, Illinois Nature Preserves Commission, IDNR).
We expect to see an array of woodland warblers, grassland songbirds and wetland waterfowl.
